Volkswagen Touareg Wheel Lugs

If you own a Volkswagen Touareg, you know this luxury SUV is worth maintaining. If you need to replace a wheel lug, there are a variety of options from which you may choose. You can use factory lugs as well as aftermarket lugs if you’re dressing up your premium vehicle with a new set of rims.

A wheel lug is a fastener that secures the wheel to your Volkswagen Touareg vehicle. The axle hubs have threaded holes that the bolts fit into. After you place the rim over the hub, you install the bolts and tighten them down.

The bolt pattern of the VW Touareg depends on the vehicle model. Every version except one has a pattern of 5x130. The exception is the 2.5TDi, which has a bolt pattern of 5x120.

The 5 in the bolt pattern tells you there are five lug bolts on each wheel. When they’re mounted on the rim, they form a circle that is either 120 or 130 millimeters in diameter.

Whether you’re replacing factory lugs or buying a new set for custom rims, there are several specs you need to get right for your Volkswagen SUV. These include the thread size and pitch, the seat type, and the length.

• Thread size and pitch: The lug bolts of the Touareg have a thread size and pitch of 14x1.5. This holds for all options across all model years. The first number, 14, means the bolts are 14 millimeters in diameter, measured from the outer edges of the threads. The second number, 1.5, tells you the threads are 1.5 millimeters apart. The holes in the axle hub have the same thread pattern, so any lugs you want to use on this SUV must have these specs.
• Seat type: The factory bolts on this Volkswagen have floating ball seats. The seat is the portion that’s between the hex head and the threaded shaft of the bolt. The shape of the seat must match the contour of the rim or it won’t keep the rim securely attached. Aftermarket rims will not necessarily be compatible with the factory lug bolts. Some may need bolts with cone seats instead. This information should be provided to you with the rims.
• Length: Lug bolts for this Volkswagen have shaft lengths from about 27 millimeters to over 50 millimeters. The length you need depends largely on the width of the rims you’re installing. Factory bolts will be on the shorter end of the spectrum. If you like a wider custom rim, or you want to use wheel spacers, you’ll need longer bolts. There is a safety factor involved in choosing the bolt length. If they’re too short, they won’t engage the hub strongly enough to give you a secure attachment. If they’re too long, they can interfere with the wheel’s ability to turn. So it’s important to get the proper bolt length.
• Wheel locks: Locking lug nuts are an option for the VW Touareg. They require a special key for removal, and they are typical sold in packs of four with one key.
