Taillights for Toyota Tacoma

Taillights are one of the most important safety features on your Toyota Tacoma. They help oncoming drivers see your truck at night and let them know if you're stopping or turning. Knowing the parts of the taillight assembly and how to replace non-working components will keep you, your Tacoma, and other drivers safe on the road, and since there are the parts you need, you'll find it easy to put in new lights.

What are the parts of the taillight assembly?

Toyota Tacoma taillights include the brake lights, reverse lights, and turn signals. They're situated on the right and left rear corners of your Tacoma. They come equipped with either traditional or LED bulbs with plastic resin coverings so they produce a solid red light whenever you’re braking or put your Tacoma in reverse. They give off a yellow flashing light when you flip on your turn signals or turn on your hazard lights.

What are LED taillights?

LED lights are named for the light-emitting diodes used in them. They're bright and light up to full intensity quickly, making them an asset for your taillights. They're long-lasting and energy-efficient. LEDs are also vibration-resistant and can withstand plenty of wear and tear on the road.

What are the aftermarket headlight types?

There are different types and styles of aftermarket taillights that you can use on your Toyota Tacoma. In addition to LEDs, you can use factory lights to match your original equipment style. Other popular style options include the following:

  • Custom taillights can offer superior lighting along with unique styling, thanks to the different shapes and light placements that you can find.
  • Euro taillights come in several styles and use halogen lighting when you want your Toyota Tacoma to have a not-so-ordinary look .
  • Fiber optic taillights give a distinctive neon look to your Tacoma.
How do you replace Tacoma tail lights?

Before you get started, make sure you follow any local regulations regarding taillights. Make sure you have a screwdriver, wrench, and the tail light housing, along with the wires, fuses, and bulbs that you need to replace, and then you're ready for the following steps:

  1. Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable in your Tacoma.
  2. Remove the tail light access panels located inside the rear bed of your Toyota Tacoma. You may need to remove screws or pop the access panel off with the screwdriver.
  3. Unscrew the bulbs and remove the wires from the housing.
  4. Take the bolts out of the housing and remove it from the truck.
  5. Insert the new housing, and replace the bulbs, fuses, and wires. Remember to reconnect your battery and test the lights.
What causes taillights to stop working?

Here are some common reasons why your taillights may not be working properly.

  • One or more bulbs could be burnt out. When a filament breaks inside of a bulb, it won't illuminate. You should replace the damaged one if the rest of your taillight is working correctly
  • You have a blown fuse. This can result from a cracked lens that allows moisture to get in and damage the fuse.
  • They relay is damaged. In this case, the battery won't get power to the lights.
  • The brake light switch is malfunctioning. If the light won't brighten when you press the brakes, the circuit may be out of place or damaged.
