The Rolex Batman: A New Twist on a Dual-Colored Classic
Rolex is no stranger to eye-catching colorways. The Batman Rolex is one of the newest, joining the likes of the Pepsi Rolex. The Batman's colorful nickname refers to the unique two-tone bezel of certain GMT-Master II watches. The top half of the bezel insert sports a glossy black color while the bottom is vibrant blue. It's reminiscent of the signature colors of the famed DC Comics superhero Batman.
The History of the Batman Rolex
The first Batman GMT Rolex debuted in 2013, but it was part of a decades-old tradition for GMT-Master watches. The first GMT-Master watch hit the market in 1954 with a dual-colored bezel, dubbed the Rolex Pepsi for its red and blue colorway.
GMT-Master watches, and the GMT-Master II watches that came after, feature two-toned bezels to easily distinguish day and night hours on a second tracked time zone. The original GMT-Master watches could track two time zones. Meanwhile, the current GMT-Master II watches, first released in 1982, could show three time zones with their decoupled 24-hour hand.
The red and blue Pepsi bezel was a mainstay throughout the history of the GMT-Master collection. However, that changed when Rolex debuted the Cerachrom bezel. The scratch-resistant ceramic alloy was only available in solid black. As a result, the two-toned version of GMT-Master watches was unavailable for several years.
Then, in 2013, the first Batman GMT Rolex appeared with Ref. 116710BLNR. Reference 116710BLNR was important for several reasons. First, it marked the first time Rolex introduced the new black and blue bezel colorway. This was the birth of the Batman Rolex.
Second, it was the first dual-colored Cerachrom bezel. Rolex didn't release its signature Pepsi bezel until the following year. For many years, the 116710BLNR was also the only stainless-steel watch available with a two-toned bezel.
Rolex GMT-Master II Batman Watches
The Batman Rolex is a relatively new addition to the Swiss watchmaker's collection. Currently, two Batman GMT Rolex watches are available.
Ref. 116710BLNR
The first Rolex GMT-Master II Batman watch, Ref. 116710BLNR, was in production between 2012 and 2019. The "BLNR" in the reference number stands for "Bleu Noir," reflecting the colors of the Batman bezel.
This watch sports a 40-millimeter Oystersteel case. It has the larger "Maxi" Dial with larger hands and dial markers. The 116710BLNR also has a matching blue 24-hour hand. Like other GMT-Master II watches of this generation, Ref. 116710BLNR has a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with a Cyclops lens over the date window. Other features include:
- Chromalight lume
- Water resistance up to 100 meters
- Oyster bracelet with Easylink extension system
- Caliber 3186 movement
Ref. 126710BLNR
In 2019, the second-generation Rolex Batman GMT watch debuted. Known as Ref. 126710BLNR, this latest model features many subtle design upgrades.
It maintains the Batman bezel, but the overall profile is thinner and sleeker. The lugs are slimmer, and the 40mm case is slightly rounder. Rolex initially only offered Ref. 126710BLNR with the fancier five-link Jubilee bracelet. Because of its softer and more elegant design features, many dubbed this watch the Rolex Batgirl.
Rolex later made the Ref. 126710BLNR watch available with the standard three-link Oyster bracelet in 2021. Other key features of this Rolex GMT Batman watch include:
- Chromalight Lume
- Water resistance up to 100 meters
- Caliber 3285 movement with 70-hour power reserve
