Motorcycle Fuel Pumps for Suzuki-SV650

Fuel pumps move gasoline from the tank to the carburetor or fuel injectors on the engine to power a motorcycle. They are designed to create the positive pressure the fuel line needs to force the gas to flow in one direction. The pumping unit relies on a number of parts to function properly.

What types of fuel delivery units exist for Suzuki motorcycles?

Two different types of delivery systems are available depending on the year the motorcycle was made. For example, older Suzuki bikes use carburetors and an external delivery system to move the gas. This type of unit is connected to the fuel line on the outside of the tank and uses a diaphragm to increase the positive pressure in the gas line. Newer bikes that use a fuel injection system utilize an electric pump that sits in the tank.

What are the parts of a fuel delivery system?

External fuel delivery systems use a small unit that is screwed into the side of the engine. It consists of a metal body with a rubberized diaphragm and a cover. There is an inlet and an outlet hose connection for the fuel line. The filter for this type of system is also connected to the gas line shortly after it leaves the tank.

Electric inline delivery systems like those used on a late-model Suzuki consist of electrical wires, a canister pump, hose clamps, a small hose, and a filter. The unit is designed to regulate the pressure as you ride in order for the injectors to continuously supply a sufficient amount of fuel to the engine.

How do you replace the fuel delivery system?

External delivery units are replaced by first turning the petcock on the gas line to the off position. Then you have to loosen the clamps to the gas lines connected to the unit so you can slide them off the units nipples. A couple of screws connect the unit to the bike. You need to remove the screws and take off the unit.

Replacing an electric inline unit involves removing the cover of the gas tank. First, remove as much gas from the tank as you can. You need to disconnect the air hoses and other parts connected to the cover before you can remove it. You’ll see the top of the unit once the cover is removed. Disconnect the electrical connections and the gas lines to it. There are several screws around the top of the unit. Remove the screws and pull the unit out of the gas tank.

Kits are available that include all the parts to replace an external or electric unit that fits into the tank. These typically include a fuel strainer, a universal connector, a rubber hose, and metal clamps. Check the models listed for use with the kit to make sure it fits your bike.
