Motorcycle Fuel Petcocks and Taps for BMW

Fuel petcocks may not be the most well-known bike parts, but they are essential for the efficient flow of gas from the tank to the motor. Whether you need to replace your manual fuel valve with a vacuum-driven valve, or you want to repair a petcock with stock parts, you can find the fuel petcocks and taps that you need for your BMW bike.

What is a petcock used for?

A motorcycle petcock is a fuel valve with two taps, one long and one short, installed in the front of the gas tank either on the left or right side. The manual, or stock, petcock controls gasoline flow with off, on, and fuel reserve modes.

What does a fuel filter petcock do?

This type of valve with a filter attached keeps detritus out of the carburetor as gas moves into it from the tank.

What types of motorcycle fuel valves are there?

Your BMW bike may use a stock or automatic vacuum petcock. Both types are mounted on the tank and require you to choose between modes.

  • Stock petcocks take advantage of gravity to control gas flow. You must turn them to off, on, or reserve mode. The “off” mode keeps gas from flooding the engine when you are not riding the motorcycle. The “on” mode allows gasoline to flow through the longer tap outlet into the carburetor by gravity from the tank. When the main tank is empty, you can switch the lever to reserve mode. This draws fuel from the shorter tap outlet, giving you enough fuel to get to a gas station.
  • Vacuum-driven petcocks meter the flow by the vacuum action of the pistons. These valves include an additional prime mode. The “off” mode is not necessary because vacuum meters have a valve that prevents fuel from flowing by gravity when your bike is turned off. The “prime” mode kicks in when you have run out of fuel. It lets any remaining gas flow through the shorter tap outlet without turning the bike over, letting you ignite the motor and reach a gas station.
What parts does the BMW set have?

  • The petcock dial and plastic cover
  • A washer and O ring
  • A diaphragm
  • Metal diaphragm wings
  • A fuel filter replacement
