Features of a 350 MerCruiser engine

With the base engine coming in at 260 horsepower at 4,400 RPM and 350 pound-feet of torque, you are sure to have enough power to get you through the open waters. Some upgraded performance models come in at nearly 100 horsepower more than the base.

How do you choose the right 5.7-liter MerCruiser engine for your boat?

There are a handful of things that you will want to do your homework on in order to make sure you get an engine that meets your needs:

  • Years - Not all years are interchangeable. You will want to make sure that the year of the MerCruiser 5.7-liter engine you are looking to buy either is the same as or is compatible with the year of your current motor.
  • Long block or short block - Make sure that you know what engine block fits your boat. It is unlikely that they are interchangeable.
  • Base or complete engine - While complete engines are very common, you can decide to purchase just the base and then swap over the top-end parts from your old motor so long as they are in working order.
  • Standard or reverse rotation - You need to know what rotation your current system is and will want to purchase the same. This is particularly important if you are swapping over top-end parts from your old motor to the one you are putting in.
  • Performance - You have the option of the standard 5.7-liter GM motor, or a high-performance 5.7-liter inboard engine. The high-performance motors will be on the higher end of the price spectrum.
What to look for when buying a used 350 MerCruiser for sale

It is important that you know how many hours are on the boat as well as how it has been maintained. Ask for prior maintenance records so that you can gauge if you are going to have any upcoming repairs. You may also want to ask if the boat it came out of ever experienced any flooding. Not only could flooding cause damage to the engine, but different waters can wear components down more quickly if it sat for an extended period of time. If it was flooded, you will want to find out if the motor has had a compression test done.
