How Do I Shop for Herters Hunting Decoys?

If youre a regular duck hunter, one of the toughest parts of the sport can be setting up the decoys in order to trick ducks into visiting. Long known as one of the best in the business, Herters decoys have been a fan favorite for many years. While many of the duck decoy types are mallards, there are several other types you can use as decoy. There are also a few ways to use decoy so you get the most out of your hunting adventures.

How Do I Set Up Decoys?

There is no tried and true way to correctly set up decoys. A lot has to do with the weather, the location, the species of ducks in the vicinity, as well as many other underlying factors. However, there are a few tips to keep in mind so that your decoys do work for you:

  • Set up in water: As you are trying to attract waterfowl, youll need to set up shop near a body of water. Make sure you place some decoys on the water, as well as on land.
  • Make it seen: You need enough decoy stock, maybe a few dozen, so that the ducks can see your setup from a great height, or from a distance.
  • Make it real: Make the spread look as real as possible to attract the most geese and ducks.

What Are Some Decoy Tricks?

There are some other decoy tricks for waterfowling. Depending on what your hunting preferences are, you may want to try a few different tricks until you find a rhythm.

  • Match species with species: If your wish is to attract mallards, use mallard decoys. However, this is a trick that could go either way.
  • Use mallards often: Mallards are known to attract more species than just their own. If you are in search of a bluebill or Canadian geese, a mallard may do the trick.
  • Float your decoy: If your aim is to attract geese, a floating decoy squad has been known to work.

What Types of Herters Decoys Are Available?

Long known as one of the most popular duck hunting companies, there are several different types of Herters decoys available, in both new and vintage styles, to help you set up shop.

  • Decoy heads: In lieu of using an entire duck, decoy heads are lighter and easier to place in some cases. Look for red-headed types or other types.
  • Burlap and canvasback: These large decoys work well to create an entire spread.
  • Mallard: The most popular type of decoys, these are often sold in a grouping or lot.
  • Bolts: These spare parts are used in the construction of the decoy, and its good to have extras on hand.
  • Bluebill and other species: Look for other species of ducks to attract a certain type.
