Denon Has Replacement Tonearms for Your Turntable

If you are noticing that your tonearm is skipping, it may be time for a replacement to avoid damage to your music collection. Denon has cartridges and arms available to keep your vinyl sounding clear.

What is a tonearm?

This part is responsible for producing sounds from your turntable by moving the cartridge into the right position on the vinyl. Tonearms can either be straight or curved. The part may move towards the center of the record while maintaining its parallel position and can perform several functions simultaneously. In order for the component to work, the cartridge must have the right height and angle above the vinyl. The tonearm will only be able to follow the groove of the vinyl when it is in the correct position. It will apply the right amount of weight on the stylus to prevent skating on the record. This part also contains a cable that transmits the audio signal to the record player.

What is the anti-skate function?

To play a record, the correct amount of weight needs to be applied to the vinyl. The friction between the vinyl surface and stylus is what creates the audio signal. This force is referred to as the skating force, which needs to be balanced in order to work correctly. If it is not counteracted, the needle will skip on the vinyl. The function that keeps the turntable from skipping is called anti-skate, and many turntables come with this feature.

How do you counterbalance the tonearm on a turntable?

Weight can be counterbalanced on your Denon turntable by adjusting the counterweight towards the end of the arm. It takes a small rotation in order to balance the arm. The tonearm must be parallel to the turntable for proper balance.

Can you remove the cartridge from the arm?

Vinyl needles do wear out over time and should be replaced to avoid causing damage to your records. To replace the needle from the cartridge, first remove the headshell from the tonearm. This process will also require you to unscrew and unplug the cartridge from the arm. The old needle can then be replaced with a new cartridge. Make sure to plug this component back into place in the headshell. Once that is completed, the headshell can be reattached back into the arm.
