The F-150 model has been around for a long time and may include a gas or diesel engine, varying horsepower, and a variety of stylish looks. Cruise control lets you sit back and relax as it regulates the speed of your Ford F-150 while you drive down the highway. The system utilizes a switch, various sensors, and a computer to let you set and maintain a certain speed, and Ford has a self-test in the system to help you make sure everything is working as it should.

How does cruise control work?

The heart of the F-150 cruise control system is a little computer that is connected to several sensors and the throttle control. Sensors are attached to the steering wheel control system, vehicle speed signal, clutch pedal switch, brake pedal switch, and the throttle mechanism. The sensors send feedback to the computer to adjust the throttle to meet the various road conditions and maintain the set speed.

How do you perform the cruise controls self-test?

Ford has a self-test that you can perform to determine that each part of the cruise control system is working properly. To perform the test for yourself:

  1. Apply the F-150s parking brake and hold down the “off” button on the cruise control for a few seconds.
  2. Turn the ignition switch from “run” to “off” to “run” in quick succession. The cruise control indicator light should blink. The blink means you’ve entered the test mode and you can release the “off” button.
  3. Press each setting on the F-150s cruise control. Start first with the “on” button, and then press each successive button on the switch. If the button is in good working order, the indicator light will blink.
  4. Consult Ford’s code chart to determine the meaning of the light activity if the light doesn’t blink, or flashes more than once.
