Hoses and Clamps for Volkswagen Passat

Hoses are like veins and arteries for your car. They carry fluids to and from your engine to keep it cool and running smoothly. You can keep your components from getting damaged and extend the life of the radiator in your Volkswagen Passat by checking and changing the hoses and clamps regularly.

Do you need to replace your radiator hose?

Radiator hoses weaken over time. Since they absorb extreme heat from your engine and conduct pressurized fluids and gases, they can also break or collapse. If this happens, it could end up failing due to overheating or radiator damage. Most hoses can last four or five years. Check your radiator hoses whenever you service your oil.

How do you check your cars belts and hoses?

The radiator hoses on most cars and trucks are installed in the same manner. But having your owners manual handy will help. For safety, make sure your engine is completely cool to prevent burns from fluids dripping from the hoses and steam coming from the radiator.

  • First, locate the hoses. The upper hose runs from the motor to the radiator. Its usually easy to see as soon as you open the hood. The hose looks and feels like a thick, textured fabric. To find the lower hose, you may need to look under the vehicle and find the one that goes from the engine into the cabin.
  • Second, squeeze the hose to make sure it is firm but not hard. If it is too soft or spongy, cracks easily, or remains crimped when you bend it, you should replace it.
  • Third, check the clamps and connections. Look for hairline cracks or tears near the fittings. Make sure the screws and clamps are not damaged. If you cant tighten any loose connections, consider replacing them.
What type of hose clamps should you use?

Hose clamps secure the hose to a nipple or inlet to prevent pressurized fluids from leaking out. There are two kinds of clamps: spring type and banded screw type. Either type can be used to secure all types of automotive hoses, including brake lines, power steering hoses, and radiator hoses.

  • Spring type clamps have two flexible metal clasp tabs on each end. To open them, squeeze the tabs toward each other to remove or install. When you close the clamps and release the pressure, they remain tightened with no need for screws.
  • Banded screw type clamps are more popular in some vehicles. They have a grooved metal band with a screw and a catch. Release the screw and slide the band over the hose. Once in place, tighten the screw to seal the hose. Be sure not to over tighten it because you may crack or damage the end of the hose, allowing fluids and air to leak out around the clamp.
