Condensadores y evaporadores para Dodge Caravan

Dodge Caravan Condensers and Evaporators

The Dodge Caravan’s air-conditioning system includes a condenser and one or two evaporators. These two components perform heat exchange functions that are crucial to the air conditioner’s operation. You can find the correct condenser or evaporator for your Dodge Caravan by learning more about the options available.

What does the condenser do?

The condenser is a heat exchanger, the function of which is to cool the heated refrigerant gas from the evaporator. Mounted behind the Caravan’s radiator, the radiator fan moves air through it as it runs. This transfers heat from the refrigerant to the atmosphere. The refrigerant condenses into a liquid as it cools and circulates through the condenser. This is why the unit is called the condenser. The cooled refrigerant then returns to the evaporator.

What does the evaporator do?

The evaporator is also a heat exchanger, but its function is to transfer heat from the air forced through it by the blower to the liquid refrigerant circulating inside of it. As the refrigerant is heated, it evaporates into a gaseous state. This is why the unit is called the evaporator. The result is that the air flowing through it is cooled substantially. The blower moves the cool air into the Caravan’s cabin, reducing the temperature inside the vehicle. The heated refrigerant continues to the condenser. There are two evaporators in some Dodge Caravan models: one in front of the blower fan behind the dash and one in the rear of the vehicle.

What are the signs of a faulty condenser?
  • Lack of cool air: Anything that reduces the circulation of refrigerant through the condenser, such as physical damage or internal clogging, will cause the A/C to produce less cool air at the evaporator.
  • Leakage: Loss of refrigerant due to cracks or ruptures of the condenser will quickly disable the air conditioner as refrigerant is lost. If the condenser is the source of a leak, then it needs to be replaced.
What are the signs of a faulty evaporator?
  • A/C fails to cool air: Because the air blown through the evaporators is often recycled from the cabin or drawn unfiltered from outside, the evaporators sometimes become clogged with debris and dirt. This prevents air from flowing through them, resulting in less cool air. This will usually happen gradually.
  • Leakage: Refrigerant leaks in the evaporator will weaken and disable the air conditioner. Leaks can be detected by smell, but usually it’s not noticeable until the A/C ceases to function due to loss of its refrigerant.
