The Wranglers manual transmission operates as a hydraulic clutch system. There are a few tell-tale signs that indicate your car needs repairing.

• The vehicles master cylinder supplies the fluid allowing the slave cylinder to operate. These master cylinders seals can deteriorate. Low fluid levels or leaking indicates that seal repair or replacement on your Jeep is needed.
• Trouble shifting is another symptom of a needed repair on your car. You might hear grinding gears, or notice the transmission shift out of gear.
• If your Jeeps clutch pedal starts to feel soft like a sponge when you depress it, this implies repair parts are needed. The clutch pedal on your Jeep could go all the way to the floor without engaging the gears.

The full clutch component on this vehicle consists of a number of pieces that are integral in the smooth operation of your cars manual transmission. The clutch is a type of friction material, like a brake pad, that offers a power shift from the engine to the transmission. It creates wheel movement on your Jeep. Moving from the Wranglers interior outward, the system and its parts function as follows:

• The Jeeps clutch pedal starts the operation on your car. It is connected to the hydraulic master cylinder.
• In the Jeeps engine compartment, the clutchs bell housing is bolted to the engine block.
• The Jeeps flywheel is located in the bell housing of the transmission. It is connected through the crankshaft to the Jeeps motor, and it moves in conjunction with the engine.
• A clutch disk mounts up to the flywheel. The disk has a splined center to go onto the input shaft of the cars transmission. It spins freely.
• From there, the pressure plate is bolted on, in order to hold the disk in place, and the throw-out bearing provides the pressure required for it all to move. When you use the cars clutch pedal, the throw-out bearing forces the pressure plate to move back and forth to engage the disk to the flywheel and motor.

The Wranglers clutch master cylinder houses its own supply of brake fluid. Hoses connect it to the slave cylinder. When your Jeeps clutch pedal is depressed, brake fluid is sent from the master to the slave cylinder. This creates the required pressure to engage the Jeep Wrangler clutch.

The Wrangler model clutch disk is comprised of two plates sandwiched together. When the pressure plate applies force to the disk at the back of the engine, the plates move independently of each other. The cars springs ease the jarring effect that movement creates on the Wranglers motor and transmission.
