Water Temp Gauges for Chevrolet

A water temperature gauge for Chevrolet allows you to track your vehicle’s engine temperature to avoid overheating, which may damage it. Your Chevrolet’s cooling system is designed to keep the engine in a constant heat range. Gauges for a variety of Chevrolet automobiles can be found in this wide selection.

Why should you have a water temperature gauge?

The water temperature gauge display, normally located on the dashboard of your car, will tell you if your coolant is cold, normal, or overheating. The coolant is the fluid medium that dissipates heat away from the engine for proper performance. On most cars, the gauge will always display normal unless the car is driven for a long, continuous distance. If the temperature is high, the car should be allowed to cool and inspected to avoid damage.

How do water temperature gauges work?

There are two types of water temperature gauges: electric and mechanical. Most later model Chevrolet cars are fitted with electrical gauges.

Basically, an electric gauge is a voltmeter. The scale on the dial face displays the temperature, but the instrument itself measures voltage. The gauge converts this voltage reading to a temperature reading because they are directly proportional.

The gauge itself is comprised of two metal parts fastened together to form a bimetallic strip. This assembly is attached to a needle. The gauge needs an electric circuit and a sending unit to accurately measure the heat. The sending unit is a heat-sensitive material and is placed in the water-resistant unit inside the coolant. By relying on the heat range in the coolant, the sending unit transmits heat changes, and this is what is reflected on the gauge.

How do you test a water temperature gauge?

A malfunctioning gauge can lead to expensive auto repairs. It is therefore crucial to test gauges to ensure they work effectively. Most temperature gauges in later Chevy models run on an electrical system. With a few simple tests, you can determine whether there is any damage to your vehicle’s water temperature gauge parts. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Separate the temperature gauge from the sending unit by disconnecting the cables. It is normally located to the right of your Chevrolet engine.
  2. Switch the ignition key to on, but do not start the car.
  3. Connect the temperature gauge wire to the ground wire of the engine. This can be done by the use of an electrical cable.
  4. Take a look at the temperature gauge. With the ground cable connected, the gauge should be around the midpoint, between hot and cold. If you get any other reading, it’s a sign of a faulty gauge.
