Looking for Shooting Rests

Whether you are a hunter or a competition shooter, using a rest can help you position your rifle and keep it steady so you can hone in on your target with accuracy and precision. Shooting rests also absorb recoil from your gun. There are many types of shooting rests out there that you use when you are hunting out in the wilderness or practicing or competing on a shooting range.

What Types of Shooting Rests Are There?

There are four main categories of shooting rests. Caldwell products and designs cover them all.

  • Rest Bags: Bags of various sizes and configurations are available to steady the front and rear of your rifle while you aim. Made from malleable materials such as leather and polyester, you can manually adjust their height and position of your rifle to suit your position. Bought new they are empty so you can add the amount of filler and weight you prefer, usually with lead shot or sand.
  • Lead Sleds: These hold the rifle in its entirety. Lead sleds allow for very precise aim and reduce the risk of human error. The Lead Sled design also reduces recoil up to 95 percent. Lead sleds have adjustable shooting rest lengths, rear supports to protect the base of your gun and adjustable weight trays.
  • Rest Pods: Portable bipods and tripods are handy for hunting in the field. Using one reduces the impact and pressure on your body. Made from sturdy but lightweight aluminum they may fold or have button release deployment options on their legs. Because they are compact, they are easy to carry or strap to the side of a backpack.
  • Rest Tables and Benches: A shooting table or bench should give you the utmost in stability for positioning your gun. The legs on the Stable Table are individually adjustable to suit variances in terrain and keep the top parallel. The table top, padded seat, and shaft are on a central pivot if you need different angles. The Pivot model has a butcher block top.
