From the years 1966 to 1992, Oldsmobile of General Motors produced the Oldsmobile Toronado luxury coupe car. The Toronado was the first front-wheel drive vehicle produced in the United States. Using ball joints, front-wheel drive was made possible by means of leaving the car’s center section open for steering of the spindle.

With their sphere-like shape, ball joints work to link the steering knuckles to the car’s control arms. Almost all vehicles are equipped with ball joints. The socket and bearing stud are what make up the ball joint, and the contraption is covered by an outer casing. The bearing stud sits inside the hole of the steering knuckle, prohibiting dirt from clouding the assembly.

Ball joints are what allows for your wheels to pivot while driving. Most ball joints are exclusively used for front suspension in cars. The mechanism allows for safe steering and proper car suspension while operating your vehicle. There is usually one ball joint for each side of the car, between the control arm and the lower end of the strut. This allows for two ball joints in the overall suspension and four track rod and rack ends.

There are several signs that indicate when ball joints need to be replaced.

• Uncommon sounds: A clunking sound below the engine may indicate loose ball joints. By sliding underneath the vehicles engine and looking between the wheels, you can locate the ball joints. Try moving the ball joints. If there is a clicking sound, you may need to replace the ball joints.
• Abnormal steering: A stiff spot while steering could mean a tightening of the ball joints. This may be accompanied by a squeaking sound beneath the engine.
• Poor handling: A significant change in the handling of your vehicle can also indicate that it is time to replace your car’s ball joints.

Only ball joints that have a grease fitting require additional lubrication over time. Ball joints are now commonly sealed, and this allows for them to be sealed without end. If the seal is altered in any way, this could be grounds for a ball joint replacement. For this reason, grease-fitted ball joints are thought to last longer than those that are sealed.
