The ABS system on your Volvo S40 can mean the difference between a major accident and a close call. As such, you should always make sure every part of the system is functioning. If you need to repair or replace your anti-lock braking system, you can find an array of parts and components to bring your ABS back to good running order.

First introduced in the mid-1980s after years of development, the modern anti-lock brake systems give the driver greater stopping power when time is of the essence. This system relies on speed sensors attached to the car that detect when the wheels are trying to lock up. Recognizing this as an emergency situation, the ABS system will compensate, allowing the driver to continue steering while minimizing skidding on the part of the tires. This allows greater maneuverability when forced to brake in a high-pressure situation.

Four main parts make up the ABS system on the Volvo S40. Understanding how they work can help you diagnose a problem with your S40 and resolve it without having to replace everything.

• Speed sensors: These are parts located beneath the suspension on each wheel. These signal whenever their respective wheels are about to lock up and relay that information to the controller.

While it might not seem as immediately crucial as something like the engine or transmission, the ABS system is an important safety function in the S40 model, and it should be periodically evaluated to make sure it is functioning as it should.
