A/C Compressor and Clutch for Infiniti Q45

When the temperatures outside are on the rise, having an air conditioning system in your vehicle that provides cool air is a welcome benefit. Knowing the basics about your A/C and clutch can help ensure your vehicles air conditioning is kept in tip-top shape while its warm outside.

What do an A/C compressor and clutch do?

An A/C compressor and clutch are two separate components that work together. The compressor is responsible for pressurizing the A/C refrigerant and sending it through the air conditioner system. The compressor is powered by the flywheel on the vehicles engine. The A/C clutch controls the overall operation of the compressing system. When working properly, the result is the cool air you feel when powering on your air conditioner system in your Q45.

What function does an A/C clutch relay have?

The A/C clutch relay is the component of an automobiles cooling system that provides the power to the A/C compressor and clutch. This electrical part, combined with a refrigerant pressure switch and a micro switch, make up the A/C circuit.

When do you have to change the A/C compressor?

There are certain signs and symptoms you may notice that can sometimes signal it is time to make repairs or replace these parts.

  • If you notice loud noises coming from the compressor when the air conditioning system is operating.
  • When the A/C compressor shaft fails to turn while the A/C system is running.
  • The cool air that is emitted from the A/C system is not as cool as it once was.
How do you adjust the A/C clutch when replacing?

When you have installed a new compressor and clutch in your A/C system, you may notice that adjustments are necessary. The time it takes to do this can vary depending on skill level, but on average, you can expect it to take about 45 minutes.

  1. Remove the coolant overflow jug.
  2. Thread two 5x40 bolts through the holes located in the A/C compressor clutch.
  3. Position a 1/4-inch ratchet with a 10mm socket onto the head of the bolt located in the center. Wedge a screwdriver in between the two 5x40 bolts and your ratchet. Crack your bolt loose and remove the center bolt completely.
  4. Place a third 5x40 bolt into the last hole on your clutch. Using an 8mm wrench, tighten the three 5x40 bolts slowly until the clutch pulls off. Do this process slowly, alternating between bolts every few turns to ensure the clutch pops off straight.
  5. Locate the shims in the shaft. Use needle nose pliers to remove one of the shims. This shim should look like a thin washer.
  6. Remove the three 5x40 bolts.
  7. Position the part back onto your A/C compressor, and place 6x40 bolts with attached washers into the clutch holes.
  8. Use a 6x40 bolt with an attached washer to suction the clutch back into its original housing location. Once in place, remove the 6x40 bolt and secure it with the original 10mm bolt in the center.
